The First Summit on the Future of the Corporation was inspired by the growing tension between the emergence of the corporation as the world’s most powerful and innovative social institution and the growing severity of social and environmental problems that plague billions of people.
Over 200 leaders from business, labor, finance, law, and civil society convened to address the question: What would corporations look like if they were designed to seamlessly integrate social purpose into the core of the organization? The First Summit offered fresh perspectives and new models in relation to key building blocks of the corporation: ownership, control, fiduciary duties of directors, internal rewards and incentives, capitalization, and shareholder primacy.
The First Summit marked an historical moment for considering how corporations can serve the broader public interest essential to their own long-term prosperity, and to design corporate forms that recognize the reciprocity between private and public intersests.
